Introduction:
Southampton, located just over one hour from London, is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in the south of England. With a population of 200,000, this seaside city is home to one of the most important ports in the UK and well connected to continental Europe via regular ferry service and its own international airport. Southampton’s special connection with the sea is reflected in the strength of all maritime-related areas of study at the University.

Established by Royal Charter in 1952, the University of Southampton has 22,000 undergraduate students. The University's main campus is set in green, landscaped surroundings, just a short walk from the city center. Facilities include the new and refurbished Jubilee Sports Centre, the Students' Union building, the Hartley Library, a range of cafés and restaurants, a bookshop, a post office and four major banks.
