Description:

Introduction:

The University of Sydney was founded in 1850 and is Australia’s first university. It is ranked 42nd in the world. The interdisciplinary nature of the nine faculties and schools allows them to offer a wide range of academic programs.

The University of Sydney is a leading institution in the Group of Eight, which consists of the top eight research universities in Australia. Additionally, its excellence is renown internationally through collaborative research and partnerships.

Disclaimer:
Due to the continued impact of COVID-19, applicants should be aware that changes to academic calendars may occur with little or no notice. Students are encouraged to either wait to book travel or book travel that allows for changes with no financial penalty.

Applicants should also be aware that processing of visas may be impacted or halted by specific countries. Failure to secure the necessary visa may result in inability to participate in this program.

Participants on this program may be required to self-quarantine prior to the start of their program for a specified period of time. Students are responsible for arranging (logistics and financial) their travel appropriately to ensure self-quarantine is completed prior to the start of the program.

Campus:

The main campus has been ranked in the top 10 of the world’s most beautiful universities by the British Daily Telegraph and The Huffington Post, and is spread across the inner-city suburbs of Camperdown and Darlington.

Please keep in mind that University of Sydney is one of UM's most popular partner programs. As such, there is no guarantee that all applicants will be accepted into the program. Late applications will not be considered.

Due to the popularity of schools within the city of Sydney and the competitive application process, students are encouraged to select a 2nd choice program outside of the city of Sydney and/or outside of Australia.

For Academic Year 2024/2025, we will only be accepting applications for Spring 2025. We will only be able to accept 1 student for that term. We strongly recommend students explore other options in Australia because of this.

Academic Areas:

Searching for classes at the University of Sydney:

Before searching for classes, it is important to note terminology used in the process. At the University of Sydney, classes are typically referred to as “units of study” or “units”, not courses. “Course” at USyd refers to what UM calls a major. You can search for units here

Grading Scale:
Grade Description US Grade
High Distinction    A+
Distinction    A
Credit    B
Pass     C
Conceded, Conditional or Compensatory Pass D
Failure F

Credit Equivalency:

6 Sydney Credit Points (typical for one class) = 4 UM Credits

Program Dates:

The academic calendar is the inverse of what students are accustomed to at UM.

Semester One: February - June (correlates with UM spring semester)
Semester Two: July - November (correlates with UM fall semester)

Housing:

The University of Sydney provides guaranteed university housing that is both on and off campus. Study Abroad and Exchange students that receive unconditional offers and apply for housing prior to the deadline are guaranteed accommodation at one of the University of Sydney’s preferred providers: Urbanest, Queen Mary Building (QMB) and the residential colleges. Keep in mind that cost of living in Sydney is high. Please visit the University of Sydney Accommodation website for more information.

Australian Required Health Coverage:

As an international student in Australia, you are required to purchase the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC). This is a requirement of the Australian Immigration Department. After accepting your offer from Monash and making the payment for the OSHC, you will receive an electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (eCoE). This document is required to get your student visa.

Passport Requirements:

In order to go abroad, you must have a valid passport that will not expire during your time abroad or within 6 months upon your return

Visa Requirements:

All students are required to obtain a student visa for a program abroad in Australia. The process is completely online, however it cannot be completed prior to obtaining the electronic Confirmation of Enrollment (eCoE).

Next Steps:

Serious applicants should plan to submit a complete, well thought out, and comprehensive application. In the required essay, please focus on sharing your academic, personal and professional goals and how admission to University of Sydney will help you achieve them.

Students who submit a complete application by the deadline will be granted an interview. Qualified candidates will be nominated to University of Sydney; however, University of Sydney will make the final admission decision. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Participation in the program cannot be guaranteed as there may be a limit on the number of students we can send to University of Sydney in a particular semester. Please ensure that you think critically about your second choice option when completing this portion of your online application.
