- Immigration - Visa: this refers to the South African student visa (Study Permit) process. This process involves completing an FBI Background check (which can take up to 14 weeks to process), gathering required documents, and lodging your entire South Africa Study Permit application in person at the appropriate South African Consulate or Embassy. As such, this line item includes estimated expenses associated with the visa process including round trip airfare to Washington D.C. in order for students to lodge their application with the South African Consulate in D.C. Please note that your country of citizenship and/or permanent address might dictate which consulate you visit to lodge your application in person resulting in an increase in your visa related expenses above the amount listed in this budget.
